"Two Days Later Jesus' Mother Was A Guest At A Wedding In The Village Of Cana In Galilee, And Jesus And His Disciples Were Invited Too." John 2:1-2 (TLB)
This story from the Bible has always been a bit confusing to me.
Yes, it would become the first place where Jesus performed His first
miracle, somewhat grudgingly at the request of His mother, Mary.
Our Messiah was looking down the road and saw how far He had
to go, and how much He needed to accomplish, and how short time
was for him. Unlike you and me, Messiah could see the trials and
tribulations of the next three years and knew exactly what was
going to happen, minute by minute. And He decided to take time to
socialize?
For there was a wedding to be held in Cana, and Christ and His
Apostles were invited. A wedding in those years was not like a
wedding in modern times. It was a huge affair, a whirlwind of feasting
and dancing and celebrating sometimes lasting for days. It was the
Jewish social event of the season. There is no doubt He felt it was
important to attend because we know that Jesus walked ninety miles
to get there.
The King of Kings knew He only had three years to complete a
ministry that would change eternity. He made no decisions about
where to spend His time lightly. Every one of them had a Kingdom
purpose. His purpose that day was to show us the importance of the
covenant of marriage between one woman and one man and begin
the three year march toward a new covenant of Grace that He was to
implement with His death on the Cross.
