"And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell." Matthew 10:28 (NIV)
There are no large signs on the side of the road. No signs on the highway telling you how many more miles you have to travel before you reach your destination. Nothing that warns you this is the last exit before you arrive.
No, the road to Hell is carefully and painstakingly disguised to conceal its terminus. The signs along the way are designed to confuse us. They promise free and easy sex without consequences. They tell you to "look out for number one." They tell us that the only god we should worship is money. They promise that a prettier wife, bigger house, or new car, or country club membership will satisfy our needs and bring us true happiness.
But, like a Hall of Mirrors, nothing is as it appears. While carnal pleasures, materialism, selfishness, and the false idol of money appear to lead to eternal life, it is nothing more than a grand illusion. A series of cheap parlor tricks by a skilled magician using the classic props of misdirection. It is a sleight of hand by Satan, nothing but smoke and mirrors. And after he magician has left the stage, and the smoke clears, many will find themselves standing in Hell’s cul-de-sac, and it will be the only time in their entire lives the God has given up on them.
Heavenly Father,
Please help me to see through the smoke and mirrors of the enemy, do not let me be blinded by the works of Satan, the angel cast out of Heaven so long ago. Harden not my heart, but pierce it with your love and the blood of your only begotten Son shed to purchase our very Salvation on that cursed Jerusalem hill so long ago. Help us to find the narrow trail that leads to Eternal Life with you in Paradise, a place you have prepared just for me.
In Christ’s name we pray,
Amen.
