“About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"—which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Matthew 27:45-46 (NIV)
Jesus has existed for all eternity, just as the other members of the Holy Trinity has existed for all eternity. The King of Kings stepped down from his throne, laid aside his royal seal and scepter, and humbled himself, coming to earth as an ordinary man. There has only been once, in the history of time, that Christ fell out of fellowship with the Father and the Holy Spirit. There has only been one dark, dreadful time that the Father had to shut his eyes and turn away from his son. Christ suffered the agony of crucifixion for you, for me, for all who would come to him Following plans written before God said” let there be light”, Jesus made himself a last, perfect sacrifice, and no other sacrifice would ever be needed again.
The Messiah performed the greatest act of love in all of eternity. For one horrible moment, he took on for himself all the evil, all the perversion, and all of the wickedness that mankind ever created. A Holy God can not look upon sin. For a moment, God forsook his own son. For one frightening period, he was cut off from the love of the Father, so that we would never be cut off from the love of the Father. Jesus showed how deep, how wide, and how high God’s love for his creation truly is. For he was pierced for our transgressions, it was our sins he died for.
