“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” John 1:29
In ancient Israel, God received sacrifices in the form of animals. It was how the people showed their appreciation, love, and obedience to God. God always demanded the best from His people. The animal to be sacrificed, then, should be perfect, the cream of the crop. No blind, crippled, ill, or poor quality animals were to be used.
Jesus, then, is called the spotless lamb because He was “the sacrifice to end all sacrifices”. He was the perfect lamb, a sacrifice so pure that God no longer needs nor accepts sacrifices. Jesus, then, was truly the lamb that took away our sins.
