"Friendship with God is reserved for those who reverence him. With them alone he shares the secrets of his promises." Psalms 25:14 (TLB)
King David is the only person ever described in the Bible as "a friend of God." King David was far from perfect. In fact, he was a murdered and an adulterer. Clearly, you do not need to be sinless to be a friend of God. The Scriptures show us, even a murderer can be a friend of God. So, just like our Salvation, no one can earn the right to be a friend of God by being "good."
Friendship with God is reserved for those who respect his laws. Friendship with God is reserved for those who walk in his light. Friendship with God is reserved for those who fear his wrath. Friendship with God belongs to those who take up their cross and follow him.
David wasn't called a friend of God because of his sins. He was not called a friend of God for his righteousness. Davis was called a friend of God because he reverenced the Lord. When his sins were pointed out, he repented and turned away. That is why David was called a friend of God.
