Rahab the Harlot: Ancestor of Jesus Christ

A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham …… Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Matthew 1:1 and Matthew 1:5 (The Amplified Bible)

Joshua has sent two spies into Jericho. At a hotel they stopped at, a harlot named Rahab told them the city was scared to death of their God, Jehovah! The two spies that had been sent to investigate Jericho were pleased to hear this. But about that time, the local police, having gotten a report about two spies being seen in the City, came around to the Inn where they were staying! She could have betrayed them, and risked the Wrath of Jehovah, but instead she told them they had already left the city. So the Police left and wasted several days looking for them.

In return for her saving the lives of the spies, she asked one thing of them. Rahab was thinking of her family in Jericho, so she asked for a promise of safety for her and her family when Joshua’s troops entered Jericho. The spies agreed, and told her to hang a scarlet rope from her window, and no one in that house would be killed, as long as they stayed inside. The spies thought they were just returning a favor. Rahab, thought the same; that she was being repaid for her kindness.

Only the Lord had all the pieces of puzzle. When Joshua entered the City of Jericho, He gave the order to kill everyone except Rahab and her family. If Rahab the Harlot had been killed that day, there would have been no baby born in a manger, no Salvation from sin, and no Crucifixion. For Rachel the Harlot was an ancestor of the most powerful King that ever reigned. Rahab the Harlot was an ancestor of Jesus Christ!
