No Backing Down:
The Courage of Magos

“And He summoned the multitude with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's shall save it.” Mark 8:34-35

The trouble with American Christians is we fail to realize the value of our freedom. We have never been dragged from our church and taken to jail. We have never been beaten following a Bible study. We have never had to make the choice between our life, and standing with the Son of God. Let me tell you about someone who did.

Magos Solomon Semere was arrested over four years ago by Eritrean Police. His crime? Sharing the Good News of Jesus with others, and organizing Bible study groups. And while you and I were taking our Valentines to Fire Mountain or Fatz Café, Magos was spending his last hours on Earth, dying for our Savior.

Magos was in a Military Jail. Years of cruel physical torture, and denial of medical treatment for his pneumonia, led to his death. He was offered not only medical treatment but also release. The offer, however, was conditional. Magos would have to sign a statement renouncing Jesus. For Magos, that was a price he would not pay, even after he watched three others sign the statements and go home.

Standing with the Master, despite the cost. Peter couldn’t do it. I hope, but don’t know, if I could do it. Could you, or would you, die for Christ? Would you stand by Him regardless of the consequences?

Magos Solomon Semere is worthy of our honor. He paid the high price of following Jesus, and has gone to receive his crown. Let us honor him with our church attendance, Bible Study, and sharing the Good News to others.
