"Suddenly there was a sound like a the roaring of a mighty windstorm in the skies above them and it filled the house where they were meeting. Then, what looked liked flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on their heads. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in languages they didn't know, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability." Acts 2: 2-4 (TLB)
This was it. The helper, the comforter, that Jesus had promised, had arrived. The Apostles knew what was happening. To them, it was an answer to a prayer. But to the crowd gathered round, they weren’t sure what it was. The same Peter who denied Christ three times on the night of his crucifixion would step forward and shine; it would be his finest hour.
The Holy Spirit begins to work in Peter by giving him a polished, professional sounding voice. The Spirit fills the fisherman as he explains how everyone there had a part in killing Jesus, who Jesus was, and why Jesus had to die. He then presents the resurrection as an established fact and offers himself and the other 11 Apostles as witnesses. When they ask what they must do, peter tells hem to turn from sin, return to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus. Over 3,000 people were saved from hell that day, by a plain talking fisherman.
