“Sir, what is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” Jesus replied “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. “ This is your first and greatest commandments. The second most important is similar: “Love your neighbor as much as you love yourself,” Matthew 22: 36-39 (TLB)
The lawyers had Jesus cornered again. Trying to match with the Master and coming up very short. They were desperate to catch him in some word game. They tried and tried, but Jesus was always one step ahead of them.
Jesus explains that the Ten Commandments can be narrowed down to just two. By following just these two, Jesus says, all the other ones will fall into place. The lawyers went away. But Jesus knew it wouldn’t be long at all before they returned, trying in their limited human mind to trick the mind of God. It was foolish of them to even try.
