Worshiping Idols: Not Just a B.C. Thing

"Their gods are merely manmade things of silver and gold. They can’t talk or see, despite their eyes and mouth. Nor can they use their hands and feet, nor speak. And those who make and worship them are just as foolish as their idols are." Psalms 115:4-8 (TLB)

Some Christians are getting the Message of Jesus only halfway right. My God would never send would someone to Hell, they say. Christ isn’t really the only way to heaven, they babble. The Father probably wouldn’t mind if they did this just one time, would He? My Boss is gone and I can slip home early, Our King would understand. He knows how early I have to fly out in the morning. They are picking and choosing what they like and rejecting what they don’t. They are practicing what some Pastors call "cafeteria Christianity" They are attempting to create a god in their own image. They go through the Word of God like a Chinese buffet. Don’t like won ton soup? Skip it and have fried ice cream instead. They are practicing idolatry, just like the Hebrews who danced around the golden calf.

Ancient idols were nothing but things of gold, silver, or wood. They had no power at all. They were built with human hands and under human control. The Almighty God warned nations about this love affair with false gods. Usually he would send a prophet out to warn the people. In most cases, they ignored him and ran him out of town, and then Jehovah sent their enemies against them to humble and defeat them.

When we create a god in our own image, we are mocking the true King and setting ourselves up for punishment from Jehovah. When we worship a self- created, watered-down milquetoast version of the real thing, we are committing idolatry. When we pick and choose, taking some things and putting others back, we are angering our Master.

Have you been "creating a god in your image?" Each time you deny Biblical Truth, you anger the Lord of Hosts. If He did not spare Israel, his own people, he would have no problem giving the United States over to her enemies. No, worshiping idols is not just a B.C. problem anymore.
