Chasing after Fool's Gold

"Do you want to be truly rich? You already are if you are happy and good. After all, we didn't bring any money with us when we came into the world, and we can't bring a single penny when we die." 1 Timothy 6:7 (TLB)

Fools gold, or pyrite, has broken the hearts of miners worse than any woman ever could have. Pyrite looks like gold, shines like gold and even feels like gold. I panned for gold once in a cold Blue Ridge mountain stream one summer, and I struck "gold!" At twelve years old, my heart was crushed when my Uncle told me it was "fools gold", and a fool was what I had been. Pyrite is like the cheap costume jewelry some ladies wear when they can not afford real diamonds and gold. It may look the same from a distance, but will not pass closer examination.

One day, when we stand before the judgment seat of Almighty God, he will examine our lives. Having been "a good person" in the eyes of the world will be the "fools gold" that send many to Hell." Being nice to animals is "fools gold" when compared to serving others to honor Jesus Christ. Being popular with the world will show itself as the cheap, costume jewelry it is when it is placed next to the eternal, unmatchable glory of the Risen Savior! Standing before the Father on Judgment Day, when the Lamb's Book of Life is opened, and their names are not found, they will realize the Salvation they thought they had was fake, cheap costume jewelry. But it will be far too late to do anything about it. They will have exchanged eternity with the Master for a piece of "fool's gold"
